CMS. New Terminology: Indirect IDTFs
According to section 10.2.2.4 of the Medicare Program Integrity Manual, Chapter 10, diagnostic tests that don’t require patient interaction are termed as ‘indirect IDTFs’. IDTFs perform many diagnostic services via computer modeling and analytics where the patient’s physical presence is not required.
A healthcare technician performs computer analysis in a remote place where the patient isn’t present. The physician sets an appropriate course of action after reviewing the analysis. The basic characteristics of IDTFs are:
- Patients don’t have to be physically present at the test site.
- The test involves analytics and computer modeling
General Descriptions, Exemptions, and Verification
The CMS revised 42CFR 410.33 in the ‘CY 2022 Physician Fee Schedule final rule so that IDTFs are exempted from certain certification standards like:
- Need for a comprehensive liability insurance policy of at least $300,000
- The necessity to maintain documentation of a beneficiary’s written clinical complaint at the physical site of the IDTF
- Openly post the standards outlined in 42 CFR 410.33 (g) (9) for review by patients and the public.
