The CMS has recently released a major batch of legislative updates applicable to institutional healthcare providers (hospitals) in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022. The following aspects have been mentioned in this truly historic policy update:
• Medicare Direct Graduate Medical Education (DGME) and Indirect Medical Education (IME) payments• Health care provided outside of a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) to HPSA residents• Organ procurement and transplantation

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a final rule with a comment period on December 17, 2021, to implement the legislative changes to Medicare Direct Graduate Medical Education (DGME) and Indirect Medical Education (IME) payments to teaching hospitals. Additionally, this Final Rule with Comment Period seeks input on the following topics & questions in order to shape the future legislation:
• How to account for health care given to Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) inhabitants outside of an HPSA area and viable alternatives to HPSA scores• Organ acquisition reimbursement policies through various updates, clarifications, and codifications relative to organ procurement organizations (OPOs), transplant hospitals, and donor community hospitals
