Rare Genetic Mutation Sheds Light on Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery, uncovering a rare genetic mutation that shields individuals from early-onset dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Published in Nature Medicine, these findings provide valuable insights into the causes of Alzheimer’s and hold the potential to revolutionize treatment approaches.

For nearly four decades, neurologist Francisco Lopera from the University of Antioquia in Colombia has been studying an extended family prone to developing Alzheimer’s in their forties or earlier. This family carries the paisa mutation, a genetic variant that inevitably leads to early-onset dementia. However, Lopera’s team has now identified a family member with an additional genetic mutation that protected him from dementia until the age of 67.
