MIPS: Key Dates and Deadlines for Clinicians 

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a crucial reminder to clinicians regarding significant dates and deadlines in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). Staying informed and adhering to these timelines is essential for clinicians participating in MIPS to ensure compliance and maximize incentives. Below are the upcoming milestones: 

December 2023: 

MIPS Eligibility for 2023 Performance Year Finalization: 

  • Finalization of MIPS eligibility for the 2023 performance year is contingent on the release of the August 31 APM snapshot data. 

QP Determinations and MIPS APM Participation Information: 

  • Clinicians can access QP determinations and MIPS APM participation details through the QPP Participation Status Tool. 

Initial Eligibility for 2024 Performance Year: 

  • The QPP Participation Status Tool will release information on the initial eligibility for clinicians to participate in MIPS for the 2024 performance year. 

December 31, 2023 – Deadline for 2023 Performance Year: 

  • It marks the last day of the 2023 performance year, after which clinicians will no longer be able to collect data for the year. 

2024 Performance Year Virtual Group Election Period Closure: 

  • The virtual group election period for the 2024 performance year closes at 11:59 p.m. ET. Prospective applicants must submit, revise, or retract their elections before the deadline. 

January 2, 2024: 

QPP Exception Application Window Closure: 

  • The QPP Exception Application window closes at 8 p.m. ET. It applies to MIPS eligible clinicians reporting traditional MIPS, an MVP, or the APM Performance Pathway (APP) seeking exceptions due to Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances or Promoting Interoperability Performance Category Hardship for the 2023 performance year. 

Data Submission Period Opening: 

  • The data submission period for the 2023 performance year officially opens. Clinicians can begin the submission process to meet MIPS requirements.

The early part of the year marks a critical phase for MIPS-related activities, and timely action ensures a smooth and successful reporting process.
