Inside The Safe Foundation

Steven Heyers Discusses Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Impact

In this insightful interview, we had the opportunity to speak with Steven Heyers, the administrative director of The Safe Foundation. Throughout our conversation, Steven shed light on the significant challenges his organization faces in addressing issues related to addiction and social welfare. He discussed the unique role The Safe Foundation plays in providing critical support to individuals and families grappling with substance abuse and problem gambling concerns, particularly within insular communities where stigma and shame often complicate recovery efforts. Steven also shared his organization’s long-term goals, success stories, and the key message he wishes to convey to potential donors, volunteers, and supporters. This interview offers a deep dive into the mission and vision of The Safe Foundation as it continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.

Can you elaborate on the specific challenges The Safe Foundation addresses regarding social welfare and development?

Insofar as substance use and problem gambling concerns impact our community and overall sense of social welfare, we strive to make an effort via individual and group counseling practices aimed at tackling these issues and helping clients manage and arrest the myriad challenges that come with confronting addiction and making positive change. Beyond the individual client (or perhaps on a greater scale), we hope our practice will serve as a clear example of the benefits associated with social work and help reduce the stigma and shame historically linked with using such services. Our ongoing efforts are directed towards increasing recognition of the legitimacy of these illnesses and ensuring they are acknowledged and treated with validation and respect.
