CMS Proposes 90-Day Provider Directory Checks. What Medicare Advantage Practices Need to Do Now

The New CMS Proposal: What Is Actually Changing?

On October 16, 2026, CMS released a proposed rule, CMS-4214-P, that would put Medicare Advantage provider directories on a much tighter schedule. Starting in contract year 2028, MA plans would have to verify the information for every listed provider at least once every 90 days and update the directory when necessary. They would also have to run an annual accuracy analysis on a random sample of their directory records and report the resulting score to CMS. From contract year 2029, that score would be shown in the plan’s directory as a letter grade, and CMS would publish scores in a machine-readable format.
