The CMS has revised its payment policy overseeing home oxygen therapy for cluster headaches. These changes aim to expand access to this service for patients whose clinical condition strongly demonstrates a medical necessity for it.
According to the new regulation, oxygen therapy and oxygen equipment are covered when performed in a home setting to treat acute or chronic conditions, short or long term, when the patient exhibits hypoxemia. At the same time, these two treatment options are not covered in the following situations:
• Angina pectoris in the absence of hypoxemia• Breathlessness without cor pulmonale or evidence of hypoxemia• Severe peripheral vascular disease resulting in clinically evident desaturation in one or more extremities• Terminal illnesses unless they affect the ability to breathe
