Proposed CMS Physician Payment Rule: Advancing Health Equity and Expanding Care

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the proposed rule for the 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS), outlining key updates and initiatives. The rule encompasses several policies aimed at advancing health equity, expanding access to critical medical services, promoting innovation, and fostering value-based care.

One notable aspect of the proposed rule is its alignment with the Biden-Harris Administration’s Cancer Moonshot mission, with initiatives to support cancer treatment navigation and improve patient outcomes. CMS is proposing coding and payment for services that aid underserved populations and address unmet health-related social needs, which can potentially interfere with medical diagnosis and treatment. The rule also introduces payment for caregiver training services in specific circumstances, recognizing the valuable role of caregivers in supporting Medicare beneficiaries.
