I’ve been a franchisee for over three years.
Can you describe a typical day in your role as a medical billing franchisee?
Every day is unique in its own way. Typically, our day begins with setting top priorities to accomplish. We start with customer onboarding activities, responding to customer queries, and providing proactive alerts. It is followed by making calls to insurance carriers for credentialing and accounts receivable follow-ups. New sales calls and staff coaching are also integral parts of our day. We review superbills, create claims, perform quality checks, and collaborate with the WCH IT/Business team for continuous improvements. Finally, we assess our performance against our daily goals to ensure we are on track.
What are some of the most rewarding aspects of owning a medical billing franchise?
Owning a medical billing franchise allows you the freedom to operate your own business on your terms and at your own pace. In the broader scope, the medical billing outsourcing market is projected to nearly double between 2023 and 2030, growing from $17.8 billion to $36.7 billion. What are some of your biggest challenges as a medical billing franchisee?
One of the biggest challenges in the medical billing industry is maintaining data quality, integrity, and governance. Approximately 30% to 40% of claim denials are attributed to data issues. These problems often arise at various manual touchpoints, starting from the data collected from patients during their encounters to the point of converting superbills into claims. Ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout this process is crucial but can be difficult to manage.
How have you overcome these challenges?
Great question. We have focused heavily on data cleansing to address these challenges. Even though it requires additional effort, we make sure to verify and validate patient insurance details before they enter our system. We also conduct quality checks to ensure that converted claims are error-free and aim for a high first-pass rate for all claims submitted to insurance companies.
You might wonder about the outcomes of these additional investments and processes and how we differentiate ourselves from competitors. Our accounts receivable (AR) metrics are significantly better than the industry average. We have seen substantial improvements in receiving payments from insurance carriers and in the claims payment cycle time. Our clients greatly appreciate this aspect as it allows them to focus on developing their core business without worrying about billing issues.
For example, we recently onboarded a new client who was struggling to get timely payments for their claims with another billing company. They sought our help, and we quickly transitioned their billing services to our system. We assessed their key pain areas, implemented proper controls to eliminate data issues upfront, and saw great results. It significantly improved cash flow for our client, and they were able to focus on their business with peace of mind.
