Some UHC plans now do not require prior authorization for therapy services

Effective December 1, 2021, several plans of UnitedHealthcare no longer require authorization to be obtained by healthcare providers for therapy services. Read along to find out the names of these benefit plans.

Healthcare providers who participate with UnitedHealthcare Individual Exchange (Individual and Family) benefit plans no longer need to obtain prior approval for outpatient physical, speech, and occupational therapy services performed on patients covered under these commercial plans as of December 1, 2021. However, an individual benefit limitation still takes place. Specifically, participating therapists cannot be reimbursed for the services billed outside of a patient’s individual therapy cap. It is possible to determine whether or not a patient has already exceeded his/her benefit limitation during the eligibility verification process.
