Easier Disease Diagnosis with New Ultrasound Method, UK

Researchers from the University of Sheffield, Harvard, Tsinghua University, and the University of Galway have made a breakthrough in ultrasound technology that could lead to more effective diagnoses of abnormal tissue, scarring, and cancer. Currently, ultrasound machines use sound waves to create images of organs inside the human body, but these images aren’t always sufficient to diagnose abnormal tissue.

The researchers developed a way to measure tension using an ultrasound machine. As tension is occurred in all living tissue, measuring it can provide insights into whether tissue is functioning in due course or affected by the disease. The team used a technique originally developed to measure tension along railway lines, which relies on the principle that the greater the tension, the faster sound waves propagate.
