Understanding Medicare’s Updated Telehealth Services: What You Need to Know

Medicare has recently made significant updates to its telehealth services, allowing for more convenient access to medical care. The changes were brought about by the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE), and many of these flexibilities have been extended through December 31, 2024, with some becoming permanent. We will outline the main policy changes and requirements related to telehealth services under Medicare Part B.

Originating Sites

Previously, patients needed to receive telehealth services at an originating site located in a specific geographic location. However, through December 31, 2024, all patients can access telehealth services from anywhere, without the need for an originating site. After December 31, 2024, there may be some restrictions for non-behavioral or mental telehealth, but all patients can still receive behavioral or mental telehealth services regardless of location.

Distant Sites

Before the COVID-19 PHE, only certain distant site providers could provide and get paid for telehealth services. However, through December 31, 2024, all providers eligible to bill Medicare for professional services can offer distant-site telehealth services.
