The American Heart Association (AHA) has officially decided to join forces with several prominent cardiovascular societies to establish a new professional certification board named the American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine (ABCVM). This collaborative initiative aims to provide a more streamlined and effective approach to certification in cardiovascular medicine.
The ABCVM envisioned as an independent entity, is set to operate autonomously from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM currently oversees the maintenance of certification for cardiologists and manages certification processes for 20 other internal medicine subspecialties. Over the years, the ABIM’s maintenance of the certification process has faced widespread criticism, with claims of being overly cumbersome and costly.
The decision by the AHA to join hands with the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), and Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) in the creation of ABCVM signifies a unified effort to redefine certification processes in the field of cardiovascular medicine.
